The Bear (rus. Медведь) is one of the two titular characters and the deuteragonist of the Masha and the Bear series. In the Russian version of the series, Masha calls him Мишка (Mishka).
Description[]
The Bear is a retired circus bear who lives in a tree house in the forest. His past job made him very talented in performing arts such as juggling, unicycling, and even stage magic, although he's also interested in other hobbies and even some intellectual pursuits. Some episodes feature flashbacks in which he remembers himself as a bear cub living in the same house. He is a huge bear with a big heart and Masha's best friend.
He cherishes calm and quiet but his world is turned upside down when Masha appears in his life. Bear's dream is to live in peace, however he finds that he misses Masha when she is not around.
Bear does not know how to talk in human language, but understands it, and communicates with Masha through gestures and the growl of different tonality. However in the ep. 11. First Day of School Bear, showing Masha letters, clearly pronounces them.
Physical appearance[]
Bear is one of the tallest characters, on a par only with Himalayan Bear. He has a brown color, lighter on the belly, breast and face. The bottom of his paws has also a cream color. His claws are a different shade of brown while his ears and eyebrows are darker than the rest of the body. He has dark brown eyes and a black nose. On special occasions, he wears a red-and-white polka dot bow tie.
Family[]
Bear has a father, but he lives separately and they rarely see each other. It was the father who taught Bear to play various musical instruments. About his mother nothing is known, but her portrait can be seen on the family tree in the ep. 48. Sabre-Toothed Bear in which Bear built a time machine and got acquainted with the Cave Bear, who is his ancient ancestor.
Bear's nephew Panda, the same age as Masha, sometimes comes to visit Bear from China. Bear is normally very pleased with nephew's behavior, but Panda together with Masha represent for him a nightmare because of their constant rivalry.
In addition, Bear has a foster son Penguin, whose egg was found by Masha, which forced Bear to incubate it. The Bear is very attached to him, although they can neither live nor spend a lot of time together.
Personal belongings[]
The Bear lives in his own house, which is in the trunk of a huge fallen tree. Near the house is a courtyard with a garden and an apiary. There are a lot of things in his house that are important to him:
